Top Domains Cited by LLMs: October 2026

Obsurfable

October's citation story is not "Reddit still wins." It is methodology splits getting louder.

Three fresh panels landed at the start of the month. CitePulse (October 2026 edition, generated 1 October) found Reddit behind answers for 91% of 95 audited companies and YouTube for 89% — but only 1.5% of 39,516 cited links pointed at the company being asked about. Vantage ran the same 200 everyday questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity on 1 October and found forbes.com cited most overall (62 answers), displacing Reddit from September's top slot — while Perplexity's community-site share crashed from 5.3% to 0.9%. Mencoro's Spain study (published 5 October, data 1 July–30 September) added a commercial-query view: 72.6% of citations went to company/market websites, only 4.3% to digital press, and 57.4% of cited domains appeared for only one brand.

Meanwhile, Ahrefs Brand Radar's public "50 most-cited" pages still carry September 2, 2026 snapshot labels as of early October (Agent A monthly refresh pending). Those tables remain the best cross-engine mention-share continuity series — and this month we expand them to include Gemini and Copilot, which prior Obsurfable editions skipped.

This report updates our September 2026 leaderboard. Read the October panels for what moved; read Brand Radar for the structural platform map.

None of these cancel each other. CitePulse ranks breadth across companies. Vantage ranks answers on a fixed everyday prompt set. Mencoro ranks commercial Spain queries. Brand Radar ranks share of attention among the top 50 sources on a massive US query index. AEO programs that blend them into one "Reddit is X%" number will misallocate.

What October's independent panels show

CitePulse: owned sites are not the answer layer

Across 95 companies and 39,516 cited links:

RankSourceCompanies appearing behindShare of companies
1reddit.com86 / 9591%
2youtube.com85 / 9589%
3linkedin.com46 / 9548%
4google.com44 / 9546%
5medium.com37 / 9539%
6forbes.com34 / 9536%
7facebook.com30 / 9532%

Only two sources appear behind at least half of the companies. Vertical tables flip the ranking: marketing agencies see YouTube / Semrush / Clutch / DesignRush ahead of Reddit; IT/software elevates G2; ecommerce elevates Facebook and Quora. Niche ecosystems matter more than a universal top 10 — same structural lesson as Foglift Q3 and SurfacedBy.

Vantage: Forbes takes the everyday-question crown; Perplexity dumps community

On 1 October, across 599 answers:

  • forbes.com cited in 62 answers (was reddit.com in September)
  • Engines agree on at least one shared source for only 12.6% of questions (▼ 6.1 pts vs September)
  • Community sites fell to 1.5% of cited sites overall (▼ 2.9 pts)
  • Perplexity community share: 5.3% → 0.9% — the sharpest single-engine move of the month
  • Perplexity still cites the most sources (8.8 per answer vs 2.8 ChatGPT)
  • Gemini answers 45.2% of questions with no sources (from model knowledge)
  • google.com is Gemini's favourite (34 of 199 answers); ChatGPT cites it in 3; Perplexity in 0

Per-engine leaders in that panel:

EngineTop cited domains (answer count)
ChatGPTwired.com (12), cdc.gov (11), rtings.com (11), tomsguide.com (10), nhs.uk (9)
Geminigoogle.com (34), reddit.com (14), pcmag.com (8), zapier.com (8)
Perplexityforbes.com (57), nytimes.com (47), healthline.com (34), pcmag.com (34), cnet.com (30)

That is a different Perplexity from Brand Radar's Reddit/YouTube co-leaders. Everyday/generalist prompts pulled hard toward prestige editorial and health publishers in Vantage's October run — while Brand Radar's all-topics US index still weights community and video heavily. Prompt set is destiny.

Mencoro (Spain): markets beat press; engines stay specialized

176,332 citations across 22,193 domains:

Source typeShare of citations
Company / market websites (competitors, merchants, specialists)72.6%
Directories, review hubs, marketplaces11.6%
News / magazines / digital press4.3%
The queried brand's own domain4.8%

57.4% of citations pointed to domains that appeared for only one of the 42 tracked brands. Google AI Overviews/AI Mode drove nearly all Instagram/Facebook/TikTok citations (Instagram in answers for 40/42 brands; 97.6% of Instagram citations from Google AI surfaces). ChatGPT owned press and official records (e.g. 84.1% of El País citations; 94.4% of BOE; government 11.7% of ChatGPT's pool; zero TikTok). Perplexity accounted for 78% of the study's YouTube citations.

Brand Radar continuity map (latest public snapshot)

Ahrefs mention share = each domain's citations as a percentage of the summed citations of the top 50 sources. US, all topics. Public pages still labeled September 2026 / updated 2 September as of this edition — treat as the standing structural map until Agent A refreshes.

10walmart.com2.3%

Still encyclopedia- and review-heavy. YouTube remains minor. Matches Vantage's ChatGPT lean toward publishers and .gov more than Google's social stack.

September's Reddit > YouTube flip still stands in Brand Radar. Vantage's October everyday-prompt run shows Perplexity can look editorial-first on a different question set — do not collapse the two.

Gemini is the most Reddit-concentrated Brand Radar assistant in the current snapshot — 28.5%, higher than Perplexity's 21.6%. Vantage's October run still shows Gemini citing google.com most on everyday questions and answering 45% of prompts with no sources at all. App Gemini ≠ Search AI Mode ≠ AI Overviews.

7goto.walmart.com3.0%
8target.com2.8%
9biologyinsights.com2.5%
10etsy.com2.4%

Copilot is a commerce-first citation engine in Brand Radar — Amazon + Walmart alone exceed 29% of top-50 mention share. Reddit does not appear in the top 10. A YouTube/Reddit AEO playbook will miss Microsoft's surface entirely. Shopping and checkout inside Copilot make retail domains structural, not incidental.

Reddit leads four of six Brand Radar surfaces. YouTube leads AI Overviews. Amazon leads Copilot. google.com only matters on Google Search AI. One playbook cannot cover this map.

Claude: still the editorial outlier

Claude remains outside Brand Radar's main public leaderboards and still barely cites Reddit or YouTube in controlled samples. Prestige editorial, documentation, and institutional sources remain the Claude path — consistent with Vantage/ChatGPT's publisher lean and Mencoro's ChatGPT press/government pattern.

Month themes worth watching

1. Prompt-set volatility is now the story. September Brand Radar said Perplexity = Reddit + YouTube. October Vantage said Perplexity = Forbes + NYT + Healthline on everyday questions. Both can be true. Freeze your prompts.

2. Owned domains stay a rounding error on category questions. CitePulse 1.5%; Mencoro brand-own 4.8%. Third-party and market infrastructure win recommendation.

3. Copilot is a retail citation game. Amazon/Walmart dominance is a different AEO surface from ChatGPT or Google AI.

4. Gemini app vs Google Search AI. Brand Radar Gemini = Reddit 28.5%. Vantage Gemini = google.com + frequent no-citation answers. Measure the product your buyers open.

5. Vertical footprints beat universal lists. Mencoro: 57.4% of citations unique to one brand. CitePulse industry tables reshuffle the top 10. Category-specific source maps > generic Reddit advice.

6. Brand Radar refresh lag. Public Ahrefs tables had not rolled to an October label by early October. Independent panels moved first. Re-check Ahrefs mid-month and update MoM when Agent A ships.

The long tail is still where most brands win

CitePulse: only two sources behind ≥50% of companies. Mencoro: majority of citations go to domains unique to one brand. SurfacedBy / Foglift: extreme top concentration with almost no all-engine overlap. You do not need to outrank Reddit. You need the clearest trusted page for your buyers' prompts on their engines — and presence on the third-party nodes those engines already trust.

What to do with the October map

  • Separate dashboards by engine and prompt class. Everyday/generalist vs BOFU category vs YMYL will not share a source mix.
  • For Copilot buyers: retail and product-feed presence (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy) is infrastructure.
  • For Google AI surfaces: YouTube + Reddit + Instagram/Facebook + complete google.com profiles.
  • For ChatGPT: publishers, .gov, Consumer Reports / review orgs, Wikipedia — not TikTok.
  • For Perplexity: keep Reddit and YouTube and editorial health/tech publishers on the board until your own prompt log picks a winner.
  • Stop optimizing the homepage as the citation strategy. Own-domain share stays tiny on category questions; earned and market nodes decide shortlists.
  • When Brand Radar's October tables publish, re-run MoM against this edition's continuity baselines.

Obsurfable matches a fixed public prompt corpus to your company across engines — mention, citation, and competitor columns separate — so Forbes displacing Reddit on one panel and Reddit leading Brand Radar on another show up as your category reality, not a blended industry average.

Bottom line

As of early October 2026, the citation map is more fragmented by methodology than by calendar. CitePulse still finds Reddit and YouTube behind nearly every company's buyer answers, while own-site links stay at 1.5%. Vantage's October run crowned Forbes and showed Perplexity's community share collapsing on everyday questions. Mencoro showed commercial Spain answers built from market websites, not press. Brand Radar's standing US map still has Reddit #1 on Gemini (28.5%), Perplexity, ChatGPT, and AI Mode — YouTube #1 on AI Overviews — and Amazon #1 on Copilot. The winning move is engine-specific, prompt-class-specific presence on third-party nodes — measured on your frozen prompts, monthly, without pretending one leaderboard is the truth.

October independent panels: CitePulse (edition generated 1 Oct 2026), Vantage (measured 1 Oct 2026), Mencoro via AI Journal (published 5 Oct 2026; Spain, Jul–Sep window). Brand Radar tables from Ahrefs public most-cited pages (US, all topics; latest public labels still September 2, 2026 as of this edition). Methodologies and denominators differ — treat percentages as directional within each study's definition.
