ObsurfableReddit spent 2026 as a default assumption in AEO decks: if AI cites the open web, it cites Reddit. That assumption broke on ChatGPT Search in the second week of August — and it broke fast.
Search Engine Land reported Promptwatch's figures on 19 August 2026. Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged 3.83% from 18 July through 7 August, then fell below 1% on 14 August and averaged 0.52% through 17 August — an 86.4% relative drop. Promptwatch's charts use millions of live-interface answers and measure share among responses that included at least one citation.
Qwairy, watching a different citation corpus, described a steeper collapse: 2.05% of ChatGPT Search citations on 1 August to 0.07% on 14 August (~95%). Treat the two datasets as independent instruments pointing the same direction, not as one official OpenAI metric. OpenAI did not publish a postmortem.
Two steps, not one cliff
Promptwatch's timeline has two breaks:

On 8 August, AIstify summarized Promptwatch's fan-out logs: the share of background search queries using the site: operator jumped from about 0.37% to 16.8% in a day — then held. Qwairy's table puts site: fan-out near 0% through 7 August, 9.7% on the 8th, 20.4% on the 13th, and 23–24% on 14–16 August.
Those site: queries, Qwairy reports, almost never target Reddit. They target official brand sites, government portals, regulators, and institutional domains. ChatGPT stopped asking the open web "what do people say about X" as often, and started asking named authorities "what do you say about X."
That is a retrieval-policy change. It is not a SERP ranking update you can "recover" with more Reddit karma.
ChatGPT-only — Google did not cliff
Promptwatch found no comparable one-day collapse on Google AI products:

If your Reddit program was justified by "AI search," you now need a sentence per engine. Perplexity and Gemini still overweight YouTube and Reddit in Foglift's early-August buyer panel. ChatGPT Search, in the following days, did not.
Still retrieved, not cited? Unconfirmed — and operationally important
Trackerly argued that Reddit's share of pages ChatGPT consulted stayed in the 25–34% range through 13–20 August even as citations collapsed — "still reads Reddit, stopped citing it." If that holds, the mechanism is citation selection, not crawl death: the model may still use the thread and then footnote a .gov or a docs page instead.
That is the same family of problem as ghost citations: being in the retrieval set is not the same as being named.
Some SEO writeups claimed Reddit added a blanket robots.txt disallow around 13–14 August. Promptwatch and Search Engine Land did not confirm a cause. Do not build a strategy on an unverified robots rumor. Check Reddit's live robots file and your own logs; treat third-party "Reddit blocked everyone" posts as hypotheses.
Timing coincidence: OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Luna would become the Free/Go default in the week of 6 August. Qwairy notes the site: behavior appearing 8 August, two days later. Correlation is not proof. It is enough reason to version ChatGPT runs by model and week.
What this does to the BOFU Reddit playbook
In early August we covered EMGI's finding that Google AI Overviews cite Reddit on 2.5% of TOFU SaaS queries vs 20.1% of BOFU queries. That Google-surface playbook is not cancelled by a ChatGPT citation cliff.
What is cancelled is the slide that says "win Reddit, win ChatGPT." For ChatGPT Search after mid-August 2026, the higher-leverage objects look like:
- First-party help centers and docs that survive
site:brand.cominterrogation - Institutional pages (regulators, standards, major publishers) that fan-out now prefers
- Entity-consistent brand facts on Bing-indexed URLs (ChatGPT's backend is still Bing + OAI-SearchBot)
Reddit remains a Google/Perplexity/BOFU channel until those engines change too. Measure them separately.
What to do this week
- Split Reddit KPIs by engine. ChatGPT mention/citation of reddit.com is a different series from AIO/AI Mode/Perplexity.
- Audit whether your ChatGPT wins were Reddit-dependent. If competitor substitution filled with vendor docs and .gov, that is the new ChatGPT game.
- Ship extractable official pages — pricing, comparison, implementation, policy — that a
site:query can land on. - Re-baseline after 8 August and after 14 August as two possible breakpoints, not one messy "August."
- Do not astroturf Reddit harder to "fix ChatGPT." If the operator is
site:, more threads will not enter the fan-out.
How Obsurfable fits
This is why Obsurfable refuses a blended AI score. A program that looked healthy on "Reddit share of AI citations" on 7 August was a ChatGPT-specific crash by the 14th, while Google drifted. Parallel prompt monitoring is how you see that in days, not quarters.
Bottom line
Reddit did not fall off "AI search." It fell off ChatGPT Search citations, in two steps, while Google surfaces moved slowly. The concurrent site: fan-out jump is the best public mechanism we have. Treat ChatGPT as an official-source interrogator until proven otherwise — and keep Reddit work aimed at the engines that still cite it.
