When a buyer searches "best CRM software," Google does not synthesize a ranking from product pages. It quotes rankings that already exist — PCMag's picks, Zapier's roundups, a YouTube comparison, G2's category page.
OrganiKPI's September 2026 analysis of 160 "best X" buyer queries found AI Overviews on 159 of 160, with 1,208 citations across the set. 77.6% of those citations pointed to pages that are themselves ranked lists, category roundups, or picks pages. YouTube alone accounted for 22.6% of all citations — more than any single website.
OrganiKPI calls this second-hand visibility: brands enter the answer box through rankings about their market, usually somebody else's. The vendors winning citations wrote — or got placed in — the ranked list their buyers were already going to search for.
What OrganiKPI measured
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Queries | 160 "best X" across B2B software (60), developer tools (30), consumer products (40), services (30) |
| Collection | DataForSEO SERP API, US desktop, September 1, 2026, AI Overview expansion enabled |
| AI Overview trigger rate | 159 of 160 (99.4%) |
| Citations analyzed | 1,208 across 158 Overviews with citations |
| Average citations per Overview | 7.65 (median 7) |
Every cited URL was classified into five groups: in-category vendors, independent blogs/roundups, review platforms/editorial, UGC platforms, and other.
Finding 1: AI Overviews own buyer queries now
99.4% trigger rate on hand-picked commercial queries is a different world from published 2025 baselines. Ahrefs' September 2025 study of 146 million SERPs found AI Overviews on 20.5% of all keywords and 4.3% of commercial-intent keywords.
Whatever intent label your keyword tool assigns, if the query starts with "best," Google now answers it with an AI Overview before the searcher sees organic results. The zero-click damage that AI Overviews cause applies to money keywords — and opting out does not remove the answer box, it removes you from it.
Finding 2: Three quarters of citations are other people's rankings
937 of 1,208 citations (77.6%) are pages whose URL or title marks them as a ranked list, "top N" roundup, picks page, or category listing.
When Google assembles an answer to "best X," it does not build a ranking from product specs. It retrieves and quotes existing rankings:
| Citation source | Citations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| UGC platforms (YouTube, Reddit, Quora) | 386 | 32.0% |
| In-category vendors | 276 | 22.8% |
| Review platforms and editorial | 274 | 22.7% |
| Blogs and roundup sites | 229 | 19.0% |
| Other | 43 | 3.5% |
A product page describes one option. A ranking answers the question. Google cites the thing that answers the question — the same mechanism featured snippets favored for a decade, now operating at answer-box scale. This extends Evertune's finding that listicles dominate AI citations and the product-page-versus-blog split: on "best X" queries specifically, comparison content beats both.
Finding 3: YouTube is the single largest source
YouTube alone: 273 citations (22.6%), appearing in 73.4% of AI Overviews in the set. Reddit adds 91 citations (45.6% of Overviews). The most-cited non-UGC domain — Zapier — sits at 38.
On buyer queries specifically, a comparison video is the most-cited single asset type in OrganiKPI's data. This stacks with Ahrefs' finding that YouTube mentions are the strongest individual correlate of AI visibility (~0.737 across 75,000 brands) and with PushLeads' September 2026 tracking across 45 businesses where YouTube led every engine probed.
If your category has no "best X" video worth citing, the AI Overview will cite someone else's.
Finding 4: Vendors get cited for ranking themselves
In-category vendors earned 276 citations, but only 98 (35.5%) pointed to a product page or homepage. The other 178 (64.5%) pointed to content the vendor published about its own market — mostly the vendor's own "best X in our category" ranking.
Examples from the dataset:
- Bill.com cited three times on "best expense management software"
- Retell AI cited on "best AI voice agents" for its own list of voice AI providers
- Amplemarket, SalesCaptain, 1mind cited on "best AI SDR tools" for their own SDR roundups
The mechanism is measurable: Google's AI Overview treats a vendor's self-ranking as a citable source for the category question. The vendors collecting citations wrote the ranked list their buyers were going to search for anyway.
Finding 5: Almost half the citations come from outside the top 10
Only 53.6% of cited domains also appear in the same query's top 10 organic results. The other 46.4% do not — at domain level, which is generous (a domain counts even when the cited page differs from the ranking page).
This matches Ahrefs' direction that only 38% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 pages, down from 76% in mid-2025. Google fans out to sub-queries and pulls citations from SERPs you never see. Ranking still helps, but the answer box is no longer a summary of page one.
Segment differences matter
Citation mix shifts hard by query segment:
| Segment | Dominant citation type |
|---|---|
| B2B software | Vendors 29%, UGC 31% — balanced |
| Developer tools | UGC 39%, editorial nearly vanishes at 8% |
| Consumer products | Editorial/reviews 35%, vendors collapse to 9% |
| Consumer hardware | Google Shopping product links appear (31 citations on queries like "best gaming laptop") |
Consumer queries go to Wirecutter, RTINGS, Serious Eats. B2B queries go to G2, Forbes, PCMag, and vendor self-rankings. A single GEO playbook cannot cover both.
What this means for vendors
Visibility on buyer queries is second-hand. The asset that earns a citation is a ranking — yours or someone else's.
1. Publish the ranked list for your own category
64.5% of vendor citations in OrganiKPI's data point to exactly that page type. Rank honestly, include real evidence, and structure for extractability. Your "best X in our category" page competes with G2 and PCMag for the same citation slot — not your pricing page.
2. Get into a comparison video
YouTube is 22.6% of all citations on buyer queries. A hands-on "best X" video — yours or a creator's — is more citable than your feature page will ever be.
3. Work the review platforms
G2 (30 citations), Forbes (29), PCMag (27), Gartner (12) together account for 98 citations in the set. Maintained profiles and review volume are inputs to AI answers, not vanity metrics.
4. Track the answer box, not just rankings
Your share of voice on "best X" queries is decided inside the AI Overview. Rank trackers miss movement that citation monitors catch — and citation monitors miss movement that mention rate catches. Track both (see the source-to-mention gap).
5. Build topic clusters, not single pages
With 46.4% of citations coming from outside the top 10, Google retrieves from sub-queries you do not rank for on the main SERP. Topic cluster coverage — comparison pages, use-case guides, category rankings — expands the retrieval surface.
Limits
One pull of 160 hand-picked queries on one day, one location, desktop only. AI Overviews vary between pulls. The query set skews toward software. Ahrefs comparison figures use September 2025 data with a different intent taxonomy — the 4.3% vs 99.4% contrast measures different samples a year apart. The direction of every finding survives these caveats; the second decimal does not.
How Obsurfable fits
Obsurfable runs the buyer prompts that matter — "best X" queries, comparison questions, category research — and records which brands get named, which domains get cited, and which comparison pages AI reads instead of yours.
When a competitor's self-ranking or a YouTube video displaces your product page, Obsurfable makes that visible on the exact prompts your buyers use. The Visibility Director identifies gaps and drafts content aimed at the citation types this data shows actually win: ranked lists, comparison formats, and third-party placements.
FAQ
Do I need to rank in the top 10 to be cited on "best X" queries?
No. Only 53.6% of cited domains appear in the same query's top 10 organic results. Google retrieves from sub-queries and surfaces pages outside the visible SERP.
Is publishing my own "best X" list self-serving?
Google cites them anyway — 64.5% of vendor citations point to self-rankings. The bar is credibility and evidence density, not modesty. A thin affiliate-style list will not compete with G2 or PCMag.
Does this apply to ChatGPT and Perplexity?
OrganiKPI measured Google AI Overviews only. Other engines read different indexes and cite different source mixes — see why each AI engine reads a different search index. The second-hand pattern (quoting existing rankings) appears across engines but with different domain preferences.
What about consumer vs B2B?
Segment mix shifts dramatically. Consumer queries lean editorial and Google Shopping; B2B leans UGC and vendor self-rankings. Audit your segment, not the aggregate.
Bottom line
On 160 "best X" buyer queries, AI Overviews triggered 99.4% of the time. 77.6% of citations pointed to ranked lists — not product pages. YouTube carried 22.6%. Vendors won 64.5% of their citations by publishing their own category rankings. Second-hand visibility is the default on buyer queries. Publish the ranking, get into the video, maintain the review profile — or someone else's ranking will answer for you.
