Most Reddit-for-AEO advice treats community presence as a top-of-funnel awareness play. The data says the opposite.
EMGI's Reddit Citation Study ran 1,486 B2B SaaS buying queries across 18 categories and three funnel stages. Google AI Overviews directly cited Reddit on 2.5% of top-of-funnel queries — and 20.1% of bottom-of-funnel queries. That is nearly an 8× increase from awareness to purchase.
By the time a buyer asks "best CRM for SaaS startups," Reddit is on the AI-enhanced SERP 94.1% of the time. If you sell B2B SaaS and have no decision-stage Reddit footprint, you are voluntarily invisible at the moment of purchase.
What the study measured
EMGI generated buying queries across 18 SaaS categories (CRM, project management, HR, analytics, marketing automation, dev tools, and twelve more) and three funnel stages:
| Funnel stage | Buyer mindset | Example queries |
|---|---|---|
| TOFU | Learning the category | "what is a CRM," "HRIS vs HRMS" |
| MOFU | Comparing options | "Salesforce vs HubSpot for small business" |
| BOFU | Choosing what to buy | "best CRM for SaaS startups," "Asana alternatives" |
Each query was run through Google's AI-enhanced search (US English desktop). Researchers counted Reddit URLs across four surfaces:
- AI Overview references — Reddit quoted inside the answer (strict citation)
- Organic top 10
- Discussions and forums block
- Perspectives block
"Any-surface" visibility means Reddit appeared on any of the four. "Direct AI Overview citation" means Google's AI literally quoted a Reddit thread in the answer panel.
The funnel numbers
| Funnel stage | Queries | Any-surface Reddit visibility | Direct AI Overview citation |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOFU | 512 | 71.1% | 2.5% |
| MOFU | 504 | 80.2% | 14.3% |
| BOFU | 473 | 94.1% | 20.1% |
| Overall | 1,486 | 81.6% | 12.1% |
Three implications:
Reddit is a decision-stage signal. Direct citation climbs hard as intent hardens. When buyers narrow a shortlist, Google's AI reaches for peer threads.
Even at TOFU, Reddit is on the page. Direct citation is rare for definitional queries (2.5%), but Reddit still appears somewhere on 71.1% of awareness SERPs via organic, Discussions, or Perspectives. Visibility and citation are different layers.
BOFU is near-saturation. 94.1% of bottom-of-funnel SaaS queries put Reddit on the buyer's screen. Missing those threads is not a niche gap — it is the purchase moment.
This matches a broader pattern in generative retrieval: models answer definitional questions from memory more often, and force live retrieval — with citations — when the query requires comparison and recommendation. EMGI's related framing: AEO effort spent on "what is X" content is mostly wasted; spend it where the model is forced to look things up.
Category spread: not all SaaS is equal
Any-surface Reddit visibility ranged from 95.1% (Dev Tools) to 70.7% (Video Conferencing). Direct AI Overview citation spread was wider still:
| Category | Direct AIO Reddit citation |
|---|---|
| CRM | 31.5% |
| Project Management | 28.9% |
| Identity & Security | 19.3% |
| Workflow Automation | 13.3% |
| Marketing Automation | 12.2% |
| Dev Tools | 6.1% |
| Recruiting / ATS | 0.0% |
CRM and Project Management are the extremes on the strict view: Google's AI quotes Reddit inside the answer for roughly 1 in 3 buying queries. Recruiting/ATS is effectively zero.
Dev Tools illustrates a useful split: it leads any-surface visibility (large subs like r/webdev and r/sysadmin rank organically everywhere) but falls to #14 on direct citation. Sprawling general threads show up on the page. Tight, category-scoped threads get quoted.
Which subreddits actually get quoted
365 unique subreddits appeared across the dataset. Only 96 were ever quoted inside the AI Overview. The top 10 of those 96 accounted for 42.2% of all direct AI citations.
Appearance and quotation diverge:
- r/smallbusiness led any-surface appearances (239)
- When Google's AI quotes Reddit, r/crm wins on direct citations (25)
AI quotes category specialists. General business subs mostly "show up."
Top appearance leaders included r/smallbusiness, r/saas, r/crm, r/projectmanagement, r/sysadmin, r/selfhosted, r/automation, r/productmanagement, r/recruitment, r/sales, r/webdev, and tightly scoped tools subs like r/passwordmanagers and r/crmsoftware (only ~9k subscribers — but high citation density).
Subreddit size is not the predictor. Topical concentration is.
What cited threads look like
Across cited threads (sample-based metadata):
- 98% were text self-posts, not link shares
- 76% of titles ended with a question mark
- 69% started with "what," "which," "how," or "best"
- Recency was roughly a 49/51 split between threads under a year old and older — engagement mattered more than age
- Across 233 unique authors of AI-cited threads, only one user had more than one cited thread — no influencer monopoly
The format AI rewards is conversational and buyer-shaped. Threads that mirror the queries buyers type become the answers Google's AI extracts.
Siege Media's separate BOFU citation analysis (~1,000 high-intent prompts, 57,095 citations) found Reddit in roughly 62% of bottom-of-funnel LLM responses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI — reinforcing that Reddit's influence peaks at decision time beyond Google alone.
Why definitional AEO underperforms
Combine the funnel data with how generative engines retrieve:
| Query type | Model behavior | Reddit / live citation opportunity |
|---|---|---|
| "What is a CRM?" | Often answered from parametric memory | Low direct citation (2.5% Reddit in AIO) |
| "HubSpot vs Salesforce for SMBs" | Forced evaluation retrieval | Mid (14.3%) |
| "Best CRM for SaaS startups" | Forced recommendation retrieval | High (20.1%) |
If your AEO program is built around glossary pages and "what is" guides, you are optimizing the stage where models cite community sources least. Those pages still matter for SEO and entity clarity — but they are the wrong primary battleground for Reddit-driven AI visibility.
Practical playbook
1. Map BOFU prompts first.
List the 20–40 "best," "alternatives," "vs," and "for [use case]" queries that sit at the end of your funnel. Audit whether Reddit appears, which threads are cited, and whether your brand is named in those threads.
2. Target specialist subreddits, not just mega-subs.
r/crm and r/crmsoftware outperform giant generalist communities for CRM citation density. Find the 3–5 category-scoped subs where buying intent concentrates.
3. Earn mentions in buyer-shaped threads.
Question-title, peer-advice threads with real engagement. Brand-posted promo threads are the wrong format. Helpful participation and third-party discussion that names you naturally are the right ones.
4. Do not abandon TOFU — reweight it.
Keep educational content for organic and entity coverage. Reallocate AEO / community effort toward MOFU and BOFU surfaces where direct citation rates are 6–8× higher.
5. Measure by funnel stage.
A single "Reddit AI visibility" score hides the pattern. Report TOFU / MOFU / BOFU citation and mention rates separately — the same way you should separate engines.
6. Accept category variance.
If you sell Recruiting/ATS, Reddit may be a weak AIO citation lever (0% in this study) even when it appears on the page. If you sell CRM or PM tools, it is a primary surface. Match investment to category data, not industry folklore.
How Obsurfable fits
Obsurfable runs your buyer prompts against AI answer engines and tracks brand mentions, competitors, and cited sources — including when the cited source is a Reddit thread that names you or a competitor.
Structure your prompt set by funnel stage. When BOFU answers cite Reddit and omit your brand, the Visibility Director flags the gap and can draft comparison-ready content designed to earn the mentions those threads and listicles reinforce.

FAQ
Does this apply outside SaaS?
The EMGI study is SaaS-specific. Siege Media's BOFU work across LLM responses still shows Reddit as the dominant decision-stage source (~62%). Treat the 8× funnel pattern as directional for other categories, and validate with your own prompt set.
Should I post on Reddit as a brand account?
Carefully. Cited threads are overwhelmingly peer Q&A, not brand marketing. Heavy-handed brand posting often fails both community norms and extractability. Earn mentions through genuine discussion and third-party advocacy.
Is Reddit more important than G2 or listicles?
It depends on category and engine. For many SaaS BOFU Google AIO queries, Reddit is a primary cited community source. Review platforms and listicles still dominate other citation stacks. Run parallel audits.
Why is TOFU citation so low if Reddit is still on the page?
Because "on the page" includes organic rankings and Discussions blocks, while direct AIO citation requires Google's AI to quote the thread. Models answer basic definitions without needing Reddit as evidence.
Bottom line
Reddit's influence on AI search 8×es from awareness to purchase. Direct AI Overview citation rises from 2.5% at TOFU to 20.1% at BOFU, and Reddit is on 94.1% of bottom-of-funnel SaaS SERPs. Stop treating community AEO as an awareness side quest. Put it where buyers decide — and where models are forced to retrieve.
